From the 2026 Constitution
3.1 The Purposes of the Society are to:
(a) Promote the establishment of a Basic Income in New Zealand, i.e. an income unconditionally granted to all on an individual basis, without a means test or work requirement.
(b) Conduct, promote, educate, and disseminate research on Basic Income.
(c) Educate and promote informed public discussion on this topic.
(d) Serve as a link between individuals and groups committed to, or interested in, the establishment of a Basic Income in New Zealand.
(e) Do anything necessary or helpful to the above purposes.
3.2 The Society is not-for-profit and pecuniary gain is not a purpose of the Society.

History
The society, Basic Income New Zealand, was formed in early 2015 and registered as an Incorporated Society on 15 Jul 2015.
Constitution Amendments
The Constitution has been amended twice:
- In 2022, the constitution was amended to incorporate a name change and to meet additional requirements for tax exemption.
- The constitution was amended in 2026 to meet the requirements of the Incorporated Societies Act 2022, which replaced the Incorporated Societies Act 1908.

The 2026 constitution
The Incorporated Societies Act 2022 required all Incorporated Societies to amend their constitutions and reregister before 5 April 2026.
The changes required.
The 2022 Act changed some requirements for membership and the constitution. They include:
- The appointment of a contact person or persons to liaise with “Incorporated Societies” and for this requirement to be included in the constitution.
- New requirements for membership.
- All members must consent to membership.
- The society must keep a record of the consent from each member, their membership contact details, and their subscription payments.
- The requirement for the Society to keep a Common Seal was replaced with a requirement to detail how expenditure is authorised.

The new 2026 constitution was approved unanimously at a Special General Meeting on Sunday, 1 March 2026 and registered under the Incorporated Societies Act 2022 on Monday, 2 March 2026.

Only financial Full Members of the Society (subscription paid and up to date) may vote at a Society meeting.

The BINZ Constitution 2022
The 2022 Constitution was replaced with the 2026 Constitution on 2 March 2026.

Establishment
BINZ was established following Professor Guy Standing’s lectures on “The Precariat” and “A Precariat Charter” during a Humanist and Rationalist conference held in Havelock North.
- Professor Standing is a founding member of the Basic Income Earth Network (BIEN), an international organisation established in 1986 with the aim of linking individuals and groups interested in the Basic Income concept.
